Feel free to get creative with alternate materials to get the exact fly that you want with this streamer. Asides from plenty of flash and material colors to choose from, different types of feathers will give the fly more, or less transparency in the water. For a fuller baitfish pattern, try using schlappen feathers, for a more transparent fly using Chinese rooster saddle hackle will accomplish this. If you don’t have hot glue or UV resin, wire can be added and counter wrapped up trapping the feathers and the chenille to have the same effect. Along those lines, for a thicker body that will push water try wrapping the hackle up the body similar to a woolly bugger to really stimulate those lateral lines in murky water.
The durability of this fly makes this fly a great addition to any salt water anglers box. It isn’t the cleanest or the best looking fly, but most saltwater fish in the middle of a blitz on bunker shad hardly care. This fly is also fairly easy to tie, considering it’s mostly hot glue holding the fly together, cranking out a dozen of them certainly wont take all day. You can tie up plenty of color variations, but blue and chartreuse are staples. Remember if it ain’t chartreuse, it ain’t no use!
Fishing this fly can be incredible fun, especially when targeting albacore or stripers busting on bunker shad off the north east US coast. Quick erratic strips away from the bait ball is the best way to fish this fly for predators looking for an easy target. If the wind is a little too much for a floating line, or the bait isn’t at the surface, a heavy sinking line in the 350 – 500 grain range can help with getting the fly out away from the boat or shore and down to where the bait is. If fishing from a boat wear socks so you know if you’re stepping on your fly line, and if your fishing from shore a casting basket is a huge help to keep your fly line where you need it.
