A major upside to this fly is that there are plenty of substitutions, and that most materials are decently standard. No excuse not to sit down and spin some up for your next outing!
Bead: A Brass or Tungsten Cone can also be used in place of the bead, that’s more of a personal preference.
Flash: Krystal Flash would look nice on this bug as well, but flashabou is the best option if you have it.
Head: Ice Dub, Prism Dub, or really any dubbing in the correct color will suffice.
Adding in some Sili Legs, or a similar product, can give this pattern some added movement in the water. Plus, can you ever have enough rubber legs? A two tone version (one color of marabou, and a different color of rabbit strip on the same fly) is another good way mix up this fly.
The weight of this pattern comes in a small package compared to some of the huge articulated streamers that dominate the meaty flies of this day in age. The bead and lead wire get this bug into the zone quickly resulting in more follows, eats, and fish to hand. Originally tied to imitate a big leech, Barr’s Bouface can also take on the role of a baitfish making it a highly versatile fly for multiple species in all different types of water.
Barr’s Bouface already comes with lots of in water pulsation and movement, but if you tie a loop knot when attaching this fly it will give it an even more life like swimming motion. If the water is swift throw a few split shot on above the fly to really sink it.
