Since this pattern is supposed to be more realistic, try not to get crazy with the variations. At the end of the day this is supposed to imitate a cased caddis with great resemblance to the real thing. If you add any materials, try just replacing the body, or adding a bit of CDC to the wing. One way to get some flash out of this pattern is to replace the ultra chenille with pearl core braid. It wont be the brightest thing in your box, but it may just be enough to catch the trout’s attention.
This is a great pattern that resembles cased caddis very well. The cased caddis is something that doesn’t get resembled a whole lot, and is a little underfished. Since most of the larva are stuck to the bottom of the river for most of the year, fish this pattern in high water when they get swept off the bottom from stronger currents.
Fish this pattern within the bottom 5-6 inches of the water column for best results. Since the naturals are not buoyant, this is where they end up being if they get dislodged. This makes this a great point fly for euro nymphing, and lead fly for nymph rigs. If fishing this with a dry dropper, make sure to give it enough line to reach the bottom of 90% of the holes that you fish.
