This mayfly dun imitation benefits highly from being tied as he recipe states. Substitutions just aren’t in the picture for this fly. But don’t worry, you’ll benefit from it as well!

This pattern best imitates the smaller, more subtle mayfly species like BWO’s, PMD’s, and tricos. All you’ve got to do to switch insects on this fly is chnage the color of the superfine dubbing to BWO, PMD, black, or any other color you prefer. You also may want to switch thread colors depending on the insect. As usual, have a few sizes at the ready.

Harrop’s Hair Wing Dun is a killer mayfly imitation that will have you pulling your net out way more often. The eases of tying on this guy is absolutely one of the most attractive attributes that this fly boasts. Other than that, it also portrays very realistic proportions, colors, and stature. There shouldn’t be any thought involved for the fish, just an eat! Honestly, there shouldn’t be any thought involved in deciding to tie it either, so get to the vise!

Fishing this fly alone, or with a small emerger pattern behind it is the correct move. If fished alone it can really produce in nervous water, shallow riffles, or long slow runs. The dry and emerger combo will serve you best in slower, more calm runs. The emerger can really help if you’re sight fishing to picky fish. They may shy away from the dry, but are likely to feast on that second bug.
