Tying Recipe
  • Tail: Casters Sili Legs
  • Hackle: Partridge or Schlappen Feathers

I have never done another variation on this fly because I’ve never had to.  It works great as is.  Usually we encourage creativity but for here, you can stick with the recipe, it works great.  The only options we recommend is swapping the red chenille with sili worm material from Caster.  It works well too and has a bit more movement and wiggle than chenille

Aside from the backstabber, this fly is my number one confidence fly for carp. It really gets carp because it looks like a annelid in the water and it looks like a small baitfish/crayfish moving around too. It gets the carp moving and eating and I’ve caught carp stripping and letting this fly sit. The chenille tail is the magic on this fly in my opinion.

Without giving you a whole course on fly fishing for carp, I will say that the best tips are making sure the weight matches the water depth and that you’re using enough weight to get it down fast so you don’t miss the approach on the fish as they are mudding, but light enough that you don’t spook them.  They have amazing hearing so a plop in the water can spook them easily.

  • Lead the carp 2-3 ft so your fly is on the bottom ready for a small retrieve when the carp comes up to it.  This is the hardest part is getting it in front
  • Do a small twitch barely moving the fly to let the carp know it’s alive
  • When you see or feel the eat, give it a strip set and hold on
