Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #16
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 3mm copper
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier dark brown
  • Tail: Grizzly marabou brown
  • Body: Thread body coated with thin UV resin
  • Rib: Ultra wire brassie hot orange
  • Wing case: Black UV resin
  • Hook: Any standard jig hook will work fine here. Match the size of the hook to the size of the naturals in your area. Standard hooks will work as well with this pattern.
  • Bead: Use slotted beads for jig hooks, or standard beads for standard nymph hooks. Tungsten helps in getting the fly to the bottom of the river, but brass can work for shallow waters.
  • Thread: Use any thin diameter thread that you like. Go as thin as you are comfortable with, but try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier, as this will thicken the body up too much.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is always a great nymph tail, as well as wood duck flank for a great mottled appearance. For a tail that will be stronger, try some Coq-de-Leon.
  • Body: Thread body. Try to use a darker brown thread color, since this is imitating some of the darker nymphs in the water.
  • Rib: Use any round wire that you like in the brassie size. If tying smaller nymphs, downsize the wire, or get rid of it completely. Try to steer clear of bright colors like blue and silver here.
  • Wing case: If you don’t have access to black UV cure resin, a thread collar with some thin black thread can work the same. Be sure to coat this fly with some sort of clear glue or head cement.

This is just another generic perdigon that you can have a little bit of fun with. For more of an emerger style fly, consider adding a few turns of a CDC feather or partridge for a great soft hackle appearance. For more of a frenchie style fly, add a dubbing collar for some great contrast in the water. If you want to keep the general perdigon style nymph, but are looking for some flash, wrap some midge flash candy cane style and counter wrap with the wire rib to lock it in. This will give the fly some subtle flash, and keep the generic perdigon look.

This is just another variation of a generic perdigon for nymphs that are a bit on the darker side of the spectrum. The benefit of this style of fly is the teardrop shape with no extra appendages that allows the fly to sink quickly to get to the bottom of the river where the fish are sitting. This, paired with a hefty tungsten bead makes for a great quickly sinking dark fly that will stand out in any water conditions.

This fly is designed for euro nymphing to be a great point fly that will search the bottom of the river effectively. However, this fly will fish great under any conditions, with any rig. Tag it behind your favorite dry dropper for a super effective summer time rig, or use it as the lead or tag fly under an indicator to really search the bottom of the rivers. Try to get your best dead drift with this fly for best results.
