Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Tiemco 5212 or Equivalent
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier Brown
  • Legs: Variegated Small-Medium Rubber Legs
  • Body: Variegated Chenille

This fly is detailed in the materials need.  UTC 70 or 140 denier is acceptable for the thread, but variegated chenille and spanflex legs are pretty key.

Mix and match the variegated colors.  That’s all you can really variate on this pattern, but tie them up in local pattern colors and you’ll find good success.

They call it the pickle, the girdlebug, cat poop and a slurry of other odd names, but don’t be mistaken, it’s all the same fly and it catches fish extremely well. This fly looks rather odd, but when it’s in the water, imitates a stonefly rolling through the stream just like the real ones do. In clear and murky waters, this fly does exceptional. I find the best success with this fly in early spring right as it is about to warm up. That being said I fish it year round and in dozens of rivers and it works well then to, Spring is simply my favorite.

Don’t be afraid to fish this fly deep and really let it drag on the bottom. It doesn’t get hung up too often in most rivers and the stoneflies it imitates floats through the water column in all levels, but tends to end up on the bottom or get brushed up from the bottom due to fast currents and the fish will move a significant distance to chomp down a meal of this size.
