The variations here are just different thread colors or wool colors to imitate different mayfly species.  Mix and match to find your favorite color combination, but rusty brown in the video is a great all around option.

Ok, the PFD doesn’t stand for Pretty Freaking Dope, but actually personal floatation device… you caught me. That is the primary benefit to this fly vs other mayfly spinner patterns. A convenient way to add foam to the pattern makes it float better and more visible, both two things spinner patterns constantly struggle with. It’s a great pattern to have as your primary spinner pattern in different colors and sizes for the mayflies in your area. Refer to our entomology section below for size and color options for each mayfly species.

Mid morning and evening/dusk is often when spinner falls occur.  If fish are constantly refusing your dry fly adult imitation of mayflies, try a spinner pattern like this behind your fly and you’ll often find success.  It is hard to tell if trout are eating spinners vs adults if the conditions are lowlight so having both on is good to cover the bases.

Often but not always you’ll find fish in the slack still water of rivers eating these spinners vs in the main current or runs.
