Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Sproat Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Tail 1: Australian Possum, Natural
  • Tail 2: Flashabou, Pearl
  • Body: Hareline Dubbing, Hare’s Ear
  • Rib 1: Flashabou, Pearl
  • Rib 2: Small Ultra Wire, Copper
  • Collar: Partridge, Natural
  • Head: Ice Dub, Black

A fly with this many common materials is always a sight for sore eyes. A few really solid substitutions exist for this fly, and wont’t affect the way it fish. Of course, we always recomend staying on track with the recipe as much as possible, but a substitution or two never hurt anybody.

Tail 1: India Hen Back Fibers will make a fine tail on this fly, in place of the Australian Possum.

Tail 2: Krystal Flash can add a popping factor to the tail, just as the Flashabou would.

Head: Any flashy dubbing, such as Prism Dubbing, will get the job done on the head of this fly.

This pattern is a prime example of an attractor pattern, and does it’s job well. The beauty of that is we can change things up without the fear of going overboard. This fly already has a lot going on! To add even more flash to this fly you can use ice dub for the whole body, as well as the head. A two tone ice dub version is sure to get some attention. You also have the option of ditching the partridge collar, and adding in legs with rubber legs or spanflex. You can also combine those two variations. Be creative with this one!

The Possie Bugger is a flashy, obnoxious thing. Just the way the fish like it! With lots of easy to find material, and even some substitution options, there’s no reason to not have more than a few of these in your box. This fly is a great searching pattern if you aren’t too sure about the bug life in a new place. It also makes a wonderful runoff pattern, because of all the flash and weight. The double rib makes this pattern durable enough to fish all day long. Tie one of these guys on next time you’re having a fly debate with yourself!

This bug is a great point fly in a nymph rig. The weight it incorporates will help the smaller bugs following it to get down into the zone. Whether you’re in the middle of some pretty prolific caddis, have no clue what bugs are in the river, or dealing with spring runoff, take a chance on this fly! It’s got all the necessary hardware for those situations, plus a few bonuses.
