It would be a crime to try to replace the original prince nymph, but making an improvement on it is always welcomed. This bug is super effective, and can be fished anywhere, and should be fished everywhere.
Body: Prism Dubbing in a similar color can be used to make just as good of a body on this fly.
Tail: Turkey Biots in Black will are the most effective substitute for the tail on this fly.
Collar: Natural Partridge looks great on the collar of this pattern if Black India Hen Neck isn’t available.
Wings: Goose Biots in White are a great stand in material as the wings on the fly.
Although this fly is called the Purple Prince, it also looks great in a variety of other body colors. Orange and green are just a few of the many options that seem to work quite well. You can add rubber legs using round rubber legs or spanflex instead of tying in a collar if that floats your boat. Whichever variations you choose to tie, have some size options ready to go for each of them.
The Purple Prince has a lot of good hype going for it. Purple flies kill it more often than not. With a classic design borrowed from the prince nymph and purple flash from the ice dub, this pattern is unstoppable under the water. Any fish that opts out of eating this pattern should be checked out by a doctor. Do yourself a favor and save at least a row in your nymph box for a few of these guys.
A point fly in a nymph rig is a well cut out position for this pattern. It’s attractor qualities and weight will win you over every time. The fly is also a pretty decent dropper off of a bigger dry fly for those hot summer days when the bugs are thick. It can be a life saver during runoff when the water is high and off color as well. Honestly, this bug gets a go ahead just about anywhere, anytime.
