The nature of this fly is extremely simple, and it should be kept that way. The materials that go about making up this bug mesh very well together. Substitutions just aren’t for this guy. Fortunately, all of the materials necessary are multi useful, and good to have at your bench.

Caddis come in all different colors and sizes. Luckily, the 2mm foam that makes the body on this fly comes in a wide array of colors. Take advantage of that and tie a few colors such as black, brown, tan, and olive. The natural colors will serve you the best, but having a few attractor colors tossed in there can’t hurt either. Make double sure you have size choices!

The Puterbaugh Caddis is a large improvement on the original caddis patterns. The 2mm foam not only makes this fly buoyant as can be, but also acts as an ultra realistic body section. A dual use material like that makes this bug an instant winner, and one you should always have in your box when the caddis are popping off. This fly is a simple decision on the vise, and on the water.

There’s a secret use for this fly that should absolutely be taken advantage of. When slender stones are coming off, go ahead and tie one of these flies on. You’ll be surprised at how many strikes you get. Other than that, you can fish this bug alone or in a dry dropper set up. Either way, try grabbing this fly instead of a more traditional caddis pattern next time you’re on the river.
