Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Tiemco 2487 or Equivalent
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten Bead
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Wire: UTC X-Small – Small Wire
  • Dubbing: Peacock Herl or Superfine Dubbing Matched to Thread

You can sub out the peacock herl for superfine or antron dubbing for the head.  On super small flies 22 & up, you can just use thread instead to build a “head” to the fly.

Mix and match any color thread and wire to make the flies you like the best.  I love olive, red, white and purple as good options to start all with silver or gold wire.

If you need a midge pattern to fish that works well anywhere and anytime, the zebra midge is your answer. This fly works well on technical tailwaters and free flowing mountain streams all the same. It’s an all around great fly to have and I know many who use this pattern as their go to for any body of water when targeting coldwater fish or salmonoids.

This is a simple pattern that can be tied very very small. sub out the dubbing for just thread when they get above a size 22 hook. It essentially turns into a thread midge with a little wire for durability as it gets smaller. A tip for this fly is to use small wire. Flies start to look funny when you use brassie sized wire on a size 20 hook. The segmentation is fine and small, don’t over do it with oversized wire, they look cheap that way.

With all my “top flies” it’s hard to give just one good tip.  Really just fish it anywhere and everywhere.  Anytime I know fish are eating small flies and they need something imitative like on a tailwater, this is one of my go to flies and with a good presentation it rarely disappoints.  Fish it often and you’ll find huge confidence with this fly.
