About

Dave was born into a fishing family, which means he’s been chasing fins for longer than he can remember—about forty years now. For the past twenty years, he’s fished exclusively with a fly rod. During that time, he’s caught fish from Nepal to Nunavik and written for nearly every fly-fishing publication under the sun. His books include From Lure to Fly, Smallmouth (co-authored with the great Tim Landwehr), and Calling After Water. He’s excited to be joining the team at MidCurrent and looks forward to sharing the joy of the fly fishing life.

Most Memorable Fishing Experience

The first fish I ever caught on a fly, a largemouth bass that gnoshed a hair bug delivered by a Cortland kit combo, was a revelation. Everything—the rod, the reel, the canoe, the water—felt suddenly twice as vibrant, twice as alive. It was like that moment in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy wakes up to a world full of color. There’s no coming back from this, I remember thinking as I released that bass. And I was right.
