You can substitute the worm body for Caster’s Sili Worm for squirmy worms.
Variations here are nearly endless due to the mixing and matching of wire colors, but the colors we have listed are my favorites and have been most productive.
I love throwing a san juan worm, but at the end of the day, they don’t add weight to your rig and when nymphing, getting in the strike zone is key. This fly, designed by Allen Gardner (ME!) is my variation that fishes deep and helps get nymphing rigs down in the strike zone. I love putting a smaller midge on point and an egg above and fishing this as the middle fly in a 3 fly set up where legal. It really gets everything down deep with the wire and the bead head. You can’t go wrong with this great fly any time of the year.
Anytime the flows come up on a river SJW can work extremely well. They get washed downstream very easily. Watch for increasing flows and fish will feed on these with a passion. The weight of the fly helps keep em deep.
