The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
You can substitute the following without many issues:
The primary variations are in the dubbing mixture and coloration related to the dubbing. Mix and match until you find something you like.
The euro tungsten surveyor is a hefty pattern that is well-weighted and an all around excellent attractor pattern. Combining a heavy fly with an attractor pattern is always a good combination when euro nymphing because it will help get your other flies deep, attract fish to your rig and catch fish all at the same time. Because it’s body is all dubbing you can load up the fly with lead weight underneath and the beadhead making this fly a deep water contender. Works great in fast water where fish like seeing patterns that look less like bugs and more like “some kind of random food”. It’s also great because you can tie this in small 18’s and 20’s and still get it deep. Often times as euro anglers we have to fish bigger flies in order to get more weight and get deep, this fly you get the best of both worlds if you wanna stay small but still get deep.
If you add different weights to them, make sure to notate that somehow. I use a red hot spot for flies that are light, orange hotspot for medium and blue for deep. That way I know the weight to expect from a glance in my box.
This is a great anchor fly in 2 or 3 fly set up. Fish this fly if you can’t figure out what the fish are eating or if you just get to a river and you’re trying to establish a feeding pattern in the fish. It is a great attractor that gets fish to move and though it may not be the best fly to throw all day, until you have a better idea, it’s likely the best idea.
