Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Tiemco 2487 or Equivalent
  • Bead: Brass, Tungsten or Glass Bead
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Wire: UTC X-Small – Small Wire
  • Dubbing: Rainbow Dubbing or UV Polar Ice Dubbing
  • Body and Back: Tinsel Flash

There are a few substitutions available for this fly listed below

  • Hook: You can do a jig style hook with a slotted bead, or a straight nymph hook with no bend  The straight hook imitates a mayfly a little better in my opinion and the curve imitates a midge best.
  • Bead: Brass, Tungsten or Glass Bead.  You can match a bead to the thread color too for a cool look
  • Wire: The wire is optional though it adds weight and durability to the fly overall
  • Dubbing: Any dubbing that is primarily white to match the iridescent tinsel is desirable
  • Body and Back: You can also use a flashabou strand

The primary variations of this fly is in the underbody color.  Red is standard, but blue and black are good options too.  Whatever color you choose needs to stand out well under the tinsel or it will all just look the same.

The rainbow warrior is an extremely effective attractor fly that works year round. I specifically have good luck with this fly during the winter. The benefit of tying this fly is it’s effectiveness on tailwaters and during times when fishing is slow. Often when fishing is slow, attractor patterns like this get the fish up and moving.

I like to fish this as my first fly in a three fly euro rig using the jig style variation.  I don’t catch too many on this fly when it’s up as the first fly, but I’ve found my other flies perform better which leads me to believe this fly does it’s job attracting fish while the more imitative patterns below catch fish.  I know a lot of people who fish this year round and nearly all the time and they always seem to bring fish to the net, so fishing it often and using it to attract fish to your rig are the best fishing tips I can offer on this pattern.
