Tips

The humpback nature of this fly with a large head is what makes it really look like a baetis. Baetis nymphs have a large taper and are often curved as they swim through the water.  Keep this in mind while tying.

  • Tail:  Partridge Feathers or Pheasant Tail Fibers also work
  • Wing Casing:Mallard Barred Flank Wood Duck & UV Resin
  • Dubbing: Any flashy dubbing will work
  • Legs: Using the wing case fibers to seperate into legs makes natural colored legs, or some hackle fibers also work in any color desired

Color variations are the majority of the options on this fly as it’s fairly specialized.

This flies large head and wing case that is created by the UV resin seems to be the secret sauce. This fly is a very good imitation of a baetis and isn’t that popular yet in most areas. A fly that isn’t fished by other anglers, but should be, is a good fly to use on pressured waters where fish haven’t see the fly very much.

While this fishes best as a nymph dead drifted in a 1, 2 or 3 fly set up, don’t be afraid to swing or twitch this fly at the end of a drift.  It imitates an emerger as well and baetis by species, are excellent swimmers and movement is a part of their life and trout are used to chasing them down as a meal.
