Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Jig Style Hook
  • Bead: Slotted Tungsten Bead
  • Thread: 6/0 Uni Thread or 70 Denier Thread
  • Line:  25lb Mono line
  • Body: Natural Zonker Strip

You can substitute marabou for the zonker strip

Substituting colors of zonker strips or marabou will do well in creating different colors in this pattern.  The movement is what the fish seem to like and both marabou and zonker strips have good movement.

Color Variations include Olive, Black, Brown and Yellow

The fly is simple and quick to tie, and is a good micro streamer that can be tied down to #16 and as big as a size #6 without losing the purpose of the fly. The movement is the key benefit of this fly imitating a swimming cranefly or leech. Fish seem to really like this simple and effective fly.

The tying video does a good job to show how its fished, but a good dead drift is the first step, then you can strip it back in slowly with small twitch or even just by twitching your rod tip some.  This helps give the wavy presentation to the fly that you see in the video and is what often causes the strike.

I like to euro nymph this fly and then at the end of the run or even in the middle of the drift, make small jerky twitches to bring the fly across the current.  Fish will attack the fly most often on the first couple twitches or during the dead drift, so be ready for any hesitation in the line and set the hook.
