Tying Video
If you don’t have ostrich herl, you can use just more marabou, though ostrich herl makes a big difference overall. Both will catch fish.
You can tie this also in Olive, Brown, Chartreuse and more. You can add a permanent marker in red to the fly on the deer hair to color it and make a blood spot. This makes it look injured and can increase the strike chances.
You can also tie these on standard streamer hooks in more natural colors for largemouth bass or any predatory warmwater fish. Toothy critters will destroy this fly, but it will work for pike and musky as well, but there are better patterns than this that are a bit more durable.
The major benefit to this fly is it’s movement it creates in the water. The waviness of the materials as they glide through the water really make the fly look like a baitfish swimming along. Flies that push a lot of water because of a bulky head also help register for striper and other predatory saltwater fish. This fly is very versatile and while a bit basic, you can mix and match a ton of different materials to make whatever baitfish you want to imitate.
Stripers and other predatory saltwater fish will often school together and attack shoals of baitfish on flats and shallows and structure. This is a good time to throw this fly. When you see the baitfish jumping around and fish feeding on them, this fly really does it’s best.
If you’re fishing freshwater for bass, try adding a bit of weight to this pattern or using a sink tip line to get it down in the water more and make small erratic twitches on your retrieve. This helps move the material as much as possible and really looks good in the water.
