Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Curved Shank Straight Eye Emerger Hook (Dairiki 125 ~)
  • Thread: 6/0 Uni Thread or 70 Denier Thread
  • Dubbing: Superfine dubbing
  • Wing: CDC feathers or oiler puffs
  • Dubbing: Superfine dubbing
  • Wing: Elk hair or deer hair to make it more like dry

It’s such a simple fly that variations are everywhere, but not really called a mole fly anymore.  Changing dubbing colors makes it look more midge like or BWO like etc and is encouraged.

It’s simplicity to tie and it’s effectiveness to catch fish makes this pattern by Charlie Craven a great success. It’s great when you’re on a budget cause it’s only a couple materials and it’s also easy to tie so it’s easy on your time. Like the puff daddy bwo, a simple pattern that includes dubbing and CDC is hard to go wrong with.

While this fly fishes good anywhere, it seems to do exceptionally well on tailwaters.  It has a simple and small profile and fish fill in the missing pieces of the fly to convince themselves it’s worth eating.  Fishing this as the point fly in a two fly dry fly set up is good so when it begins to sink, you can still watch your front fly if a fish takes it.  This fly really brings fish to the net.
