Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard Dry Fly Hook (Down eye, straight shank)
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Tail: Z-lon
  • Body: Zelon/Rabbit Dubbing Mix
  • Back/Bubble: White Z-lon
  • Head: Hares Ear Dubbing
  • Tools: Dubbing Wax
  • Tail: Antron, Polar, Ice or any synthetic dubbing
  • Body: Any coarse dubbing (SLF Whitlock, Hares Ear, Hares Ear Plus, Rabbit, Possum, Beaver etc)
  • Back/Bubble: White Antron, Polar, Ice or synthetic dubbing that is long enough to create the loop.  Z-lon really is best for this however.

Not much room to variate on this pattern, but you can add some flash in the tail and bubble section and change colors of dubbings to imitate different caddis colors, but that’s about it.

The touch dubbing is one of the coolest techniques to learn in this pattern and it really makes an impressionistic pattern look great. It’s ultra-fishy looking and fish really seem to go nuts on this pattern because the messy look gives a lot of impression of “insect” to the trout.

The best way to fish this pattern is with a dry fly in front and let this fish as an emerger.  During a caddis hatch or not, this pattern works great.  I like using a high floating, easy to see caddis, stonefly or hopper pattern up front and then trail this behind about 18-36 inches.  Watch for takes above and below the surface as the iris caddis sits in the water half in and half out a lot of times and is prone to sinking.  Just use some fly duster on it when it gets wet and sinks, unless of course fish are eating it sunk, then let that dog hunt!
