Tying Video
Such a simple pattern, the only way to variate is in the following way:
Simple and easy to tie in small sizes, this fly is great for imitating midge adults during a hatch. Trout love it and it’s actually pretty easy to see even in the size 18 – 24 range it’s often tied in. A simple bug profile, fish are able to identify it as midge-like and are usually willing to give it a shot. It’s pretty low maintenance for a fly this size cause the hackle and wing both float well and don’t get too waterlogged. It’s a good pattern if you often see midge hatches where you fish.
This can be fished as a single dry fly or a 2 or even three dry fly set up. 6x is key usually to not only help thread the fly, but to also help it drift well without any drag.
I prefer to fish this as the 2nd fly in a two fly dry fly set up with a highly visible griffiths gnat or similar pattern to help detect strikes and see where the flies are drifting. A standard dry fly presentation that is drag free and on line with trout is all that is usually needed.
