You can mix and match any colors to match the ants in your area. Purple is also a nice option for all around. It’s simple and effective taking little to no time to tie. A small foam parachute post on top of this pattern helps it float even better.
The best thing about this pattern is how easy it is to tie. Most of us don’t fish ant patterns a lot so taking a ton of time on the patterns isn’t a great use of time. This pattern works well and takes little to no time to tie up making it a great way to stock up the box for the few times you get into waters where you need some ants.
Often a bit hard to see, ant patterns fish best behind a larger, more high floating dry fly like a stimulator, elk hair caddis or foam hopper fly. Make sure to put at least 24 inches between the flies with your tippet as you don’t want to spook any fish with a bigger dry that will only come up for a small ant. This also helps the ant float more naturally. Go down a tippet size as well so if you do get hung up, you only lose the cheap ant not the front fly too. This also helps the ant land a little softer on the water as less energy is transferred through the lighter tippet on the end of your cast.
