Tying Video
You can mix and match the mop color with the egg color in endless ways. I’m not sure one works better than the other and it’s really up to personal preference as they all seem to perform well. If you dont like the egg style, then fine a beadhead that matches the mop color and ditch the egg and just do a beadhead. This is just a traditional mop fly.
The key benefit of this fly is once you have the materials, it’s really cheap and quick to tie. You can add beadheads and wire to get it deeper, or keep it shallow and drop the weight. All seem to work well and though this is a bit of a monstrosity in terms of purism, people wouldn’t be fishing it so much if it didn’t work. Very popular out east and quickly making it’s way west, this is a great competition fly or any fly if you’re looking to throw something new at picky fish or stocked trout alike.
Depending on if it’s weighted or not, it makes a good first fly or point fly. If it’s weighted, use it as the first fly to get things deep in your rig. If you don’t have weight, use it as the point fly so it gets a very natural drift and then have another heavier fly or split shot on above to get the fly down and into the strike zone. I think this fly imitates leeches, craneflies and annelids mostly, but it’s really an attractor pattern that gets the fish moving to your fly.
