Tying Video
no real substitutions on this fly, too few materials
Adding a soft hackle to the front in gray and/or adding a orange tungsten or brass beadhead are two of the better variations out there. You can tie this in grey or tan as the most common colors, but olive is also a contender.
Simple to tie and deadly effective where sowbugs and scuds are all over the place. Tailwaters do best with this pattern and the bighorn river is well known for this pattern. This fly is cheap, durable, effective and simple to tie. What more could you want from a pattern?
I really like the beadhead and softhackle variations because it gets deep and the overall look of the fly still really fools fish well. It doesn’t seem that a beadhead or softhackle confuses the fish any but only entices them further. Get it down deep right along the bottom and you’ll find fish. It really is that simple to fish if the trout are on the fly.
