You can add wire for ribbing and do different colors and mixtures of dubbing, but to be honest, this fly is meant to be super simple and just have a natural color profile. That’s all you need to catch fish as it’s simple and suggestive.
It’s cheap and fast to tie and has a reputation for being one of the more consistent flies out there. It is an impressionistic search pattern which covers the gambit of most nymph insects with just enough accuracy to catch fish, but not enough to exclude insects from the list. It’s similar to a hares ear in it’s right and catches fish in a similar fashion. The Jig style is a nice added benefit because of the weight of the fly. Jig styles don’t get hung up as much.
Fish it in a euro rig or suspension rig (indicator) but get it to the bottom. This likely imitates cranefly larva, caddis larva, and mayflies/stoneflies that match the size of the hook you have on all of which are often just a few inches off the bottom of the rivers bottom. If you can bounce it along the bottom, you’ll pick up a ton of fish. A euro rig really helps you feel the bottom and you can often detect when a fish eats better this way than with a traditional suspension rig where you aren’t in constant contact with the fly.
