The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
The two major variations you can do on this fly is changing the color of the fly or putting it on a jig-style hook with a slotted tungsten bead. I personally fish something very similar to this when euro nymphing and have incredible success with it. It’s a very worth while variation to tie. Since the dubbing on the head is so big, you can get away with a few lead wire wraps under it too to add even more weight if you really want, though with such a sparse pattern, it’s rarely necessary.
The best benefits of this fly is that it’s an impressionistic fly pattern that looks like a variety of small nymphs in the water and it’s profile is sparse with a heavy beadhead. The profile and weight really help it sink fast which is where it got it’s name. Getting down in the strike zone is often more than half the battle most times and when you pair this with a suggestive pattern like this, it fools the majority of trout.
While you can fish this fly anywhere, it outperforms other flies in faster water with slow currents on the river bottom and fast currents above. Removing your indicator and euro nymphing gets this fly down bouncing on the bottom in the faster, more protected water where many trout feed but get passed over from anglers fishing traditional strike indicator rigs because they can’t get a good drift. If you’re going to tie this fly up and fish it, ditch the indicator and “high stick” the fast water right along with the spots you always fish. You’ll be impressed with how many more fish you’ll find in water you used to pass over.
