Adding rubberlegs to the body or adding calf hair and flash to the elk wing are classic variations making it into a yellow stimulator pretty much. Beyond that you’re just tying a stimulator.
This fly both floats high and dry and is impressionistic and able to fool trout into thinking its a golden stone or any other yellow stonefly, caddis or hopper. This versatility during the summer months gives you more options to get strikes. It also floats well making it low maintenance and a good choice for fishing the classic dry dropper technique.
Overall the best option for fishing this fly is with a dry dropper like a copper john or hares ear below. It seems to get a lot of fish during the summer months mixing so much goodness on the surface with a search pattern as the dropper, it really is able to fool a lot of fish who are not being selective to any one pattern and instead just looking for a good meal.
I fish the dropper 24-36 inches below the fly unless fishing really shallow water that isn’t very quick. Then 12 – 18 is better. If fish are tight to the banks, ditch the dropper and just snipe them with the single dry fly. Its a simple and easy way to fish and very fun.
