Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Dry Fly Hook: Straight eye, curved shank, wide gap (~Tiemco 2488 or 2487)
  • Thread:  UTC 70
  • Body: Small Clear D-Rib
  • Wing: Natural or Dun Elk Hair
  • Post: FL. Cerise McFlyfoam
  • Thorax: Black Superfine Dubbing
  • Hackle: Grizzly Whiting High and Dry Rooster Cape Feather

No substitutions on this pattern.

You can change the colors of the deer or elk hair and the thread color to change the color of the fly.  Black hair and black thread for black caddis for example.  I like orange a lot for this pattern.

Highly visible for anglers, and a realistic profile for the trout. Jay Zimmerman is the inventor of this pattern and does a great job of making a pattern that is easy to see and realistic for the trout. You don’t have to sacrifice visibility for realism here and that makes it a highly effective fly that often outperforms more traditional caddis dry fly patterns

I like to fish this as the first fly in a dual dry fly rig and then trail a CDC caddis emerger or something that is super realistic but hard to see.  Paired together it’s often deadly for trout during the late spring into summer and all the way into fall.
