As with most mayfly patterns, you can adjust the size and color of the pattern to imitate a variety of mayfly species from grey and brown drakes, to hex mayflies and mahagony duns. If you know the insects in your area, you can match the color and size to imitate the insect accordingly. This is a standard parachute pattern that can be adjusted as needed.
You can also sub in a black parachute post or variate and do a thorax style hackle to create the wings.
This is a standard parachute pattern that works great for nearly all kinds of mayflies. Learning this pattern will teach you what you need to know in order to imitate all mayfly adult/dry flies. Once you master the pattern, you’ll find it’s fairly easy and affordable as dry flies go. Mix and match colors to imitate any mayfly for your area.
Fish this fly during the right seasons listed below for the insect hatches. It doesn’t even have to be during a hatch. In fact, I often have more luck with parachute dry flies like this when a hatch isn’t active. I think it’s a matter of competition and when there isn’t much of a hatch, it’s easy to be the most attractive food. I like fishing this as the first fly and then an emerging green drake pattern behind it. This gets most fish to come up and rise to my offering.
