Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Perfect Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy, 2X Long
  • Weight: .020 Lead Wire
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Body: Medium Chenille, Orange and Black
  • Collar: Whiting Rooster Cape, Brown
  • Legs: Medium Round Rubber Legs, White

Very few substitutions exist for this pattern because it is so specific. There are a few materials you are able to switch up though.

Legs: Any rubber leg in the correct color and size will do the trick.

Collar: Brown hackle of any type that is the correct size will suffice.

The Bitch Creek Stonefly Nymph is a stellar salmonfly imitation because of the unique way it’s tied and the coloration. For those reasons variations are slim, and staying true to the recipe will pay off big time!

Salmonfly hatches are some of the most coveted on more than a few rivers throughout the West. The Bitch Creek Stonefly Nymph is an incredible choice when the salmonfly season comes around to your local piece of water. The colors and white legs contrast really well to make a bug that trout just can’t seem to get enough of. It also pulls it’s weight when fished to represent any other type of stonefly. When you need to get down into the feeding zone, and stones of any kind are present twist one of these guys on!

This bug is super weighted from the lead wire, so fishing it in high, dirty water is always a solid choice. First in line in a nymph rig is a perfect resting place for the Bitch Creek, as it will pull down the other smaller bugs behind it into the desired water column. Varying weights when tying can be super helpful, allowing you to fish the fly in more situations with success. A less weighted version and be easily floated underneath a big dry for some intense dry dropper action.
