  • Hot Spot: 2mm Foam, White

Very few material go into tying up this quick and easy beetle pattern, and therefore there are very few substitutions that can be incorporated. In fact, you can really only make one comfortably.

Body: Wapsi Super Fine Dubbing can also do the job, but the Peacock Herl is the best if you have it.

One of the biggest things to remember about beetles is how many types there are. They are many different sizes, and colors. That being the case make sure you have plenty of colors tied in multiple sizes. It wouldn’t be uncommon to have five size variations of this bug in a few different colors.

Beetles are a trout food staple in many places around the country. These insects a prone to toppling into the water and being a trout snack. This simple pattern fits the profile of the actual insect perfectly, all you have to do is match color and size! Being so light and mostly foam this Foam Beetle will float for hours on end. It will probably be torn up by all the fish you catch before it starts to lose it’s buoyancy.

Putting this Foam Beetle tight to the bank will produce the best results. Don’t yank it out of the water if a current pulls it under a little bit next to a big rock or undercut bank either. A helpless, slightly sunken beetle can spell out dinner time for lots of fish.
