The Charlie Boy Hopper is an ultra realistic grasshopper pattern that can’t be reckoned with in late summer when the hoppers are in full force. There are not any super plausible substitutions for this guy. Charlie Craven really perfected it when he came up with this pattern.
As far as changing this pattern up, there isn’t many options either. Different colors like yellow and olive can make a big difference on the water, but other than that sticking to the recipe will treat you the best.
Realistic hopper patterns that actually fish well are one in a million. Fortunately this fly happens to be one of those that does. It’s one of those bugs that’s everything you need, and nothing you don’t. It can take a beating, floats like boat, and fools fish like a magician. It really is difficult to find something bad to say about this simplistic, wonderful bug.
A hopper dropper type rig is the most ideal for this bug. It is buoyant enough to support a semi large nymph, and attracts the fish without tipping them off. Fishing it close to the bank will provide the the majority of the looks and strikes in most places.
