Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Sproat Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy
  • Thread: Veevus 14/0, Brown
  • Body Base: Superfine Dubbing, Any Color
  • Body: Ruffed Grouse Tail Feather
  • Hackle: Hungarian Partridge, Natural

This is a pattern almost as old as fly fishing itself, and it’s still around because of how productive this combination of materials is. Luckily, if you don’t have all of these things at your tying station it’s not the end of the road. There are a couple of solid substitutions.

Thread: UTC 70 Denier in Brown will do the trick if you’re unable to locate some Veevus 14/0 in the correct color.

Body Base: Any dubbing that will wrap tightly, similar to Superfine, will do a fine job.

Hackle: India Hen Back in Grizzly will create a similar look to the Natural Hungarian Partridge.

This classic pattern is killer cased caddis imitation that has stood the test of time. As far as variations go, there is one very simple one. Add a brass or tungsten bead for additional weight. Stick to the recipe, and your sure to have some fish in your net!

The Breadcrust pattern was, has been , and will continue to be a cased caddis pattern that fools selective trout all day long. Where caddis are present this buggy looking fly will excel at giving you chances at fish. The segmentation that the grouse creates, and the movement of the hackle make an irresistible trout snack.

This is a great tailwater pattern when caddis are present. Fishing it as the first fly in a nymph rig set up will produce great results, especially when you add the brass or tungsten bead to give it some weight. In a smaller hook size fished near the bottom this bug can be a trout magnet.
