Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Emerger Hook, Reverse Bend, 2x Short
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Florescent Orange
  • Tail: Wood Duck Flank Feather, Natural
  • Rib: Small Ultra Wire, Gold
  • Body: Sow Scud Dubbing, Smoky Olive
  • Back: Wood Duck Flank Feather, Natural

Scuds come in a variety of colors and sizes so the substitutions on flies like this one are easy to come by. The original recipe looks the best, but a stand in material or two won’t take away this fly’s buggy look.

Tail: Mallard Flank Feather in the wood duck color would be an appropriate substitution if need be.

Body: Sow Scud Dubbing really is the best, but really any dubbing material that will brush out at the end will be sufficient.

Back: Again, Mallard Flank Feather in the wood duck color would be an appropriate substitution if need be.

With so much variety in scuds and the patterns that imitate them, it is always a smart move to have more colors and sizes than you think you may need. Other than those two things there really aren’t any variations recommended for this pattern.

Natural colors throughout the body of the fly clash with the bright color of the thread making this pattern ultra appealing to fish. The tight segmentation also contributes positively to the look of this bug. Beating the imitative look and coloring of wood duck is a difficult task. All around we have a fly that has all the right things in all the right places, so hurry, get the vise!

In rivers Fishing this fly near the bottom in a succession of nymphs is going to be the most productive for you. This bug doesn’t have any weight of it’s own so a heavier fly above it, or split shot is always a good idea to get the fly into the feeding zone. As for still waters, the bottom of a nymph rig or underneath a dry fly is a great spot for this pattern.
