Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Emerger Hook, Reverse Bend, 2x Short
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten or Glass, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Body: Micro Stretch Tubing, Red

This bug has extremely limited material substitution because of the limited list of materials. There really isn’t any awesome stand in’s, but there is one worth mentioning.

Body: Midge sized D-Rib can work for the body, but defeats the look of the translucent body.

As far as changing things up you can switch thread color, tubing color, and bead color. Remember to change the name of the fly if you switch the thread and tubing!

The Red and Black Midge is superbly easy to tie, and works like a charm. The translucency on the body, and the two colors working together really adds to the realistic attributes of this fly. Red and black are a timeless color combination when it comes to fly tying, and the fish seem to agree!

Tumbled through a riffle or fished deep near the bottom on a slow run are two places this fly will be right at home. Unless you really need the extra weight of brass or tungsten go with the glass bead, it looks the best, and preforms the best.
