Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Sproat Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy, 1X Long
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Tan
  • Tail: Spanflex, Ginger
  • Body 1: Goose Biots, Tan
  • Body 2: Hareline Dubbing, Light Cahill
  • Rib: Brassie Ultra Wire, Copper
  • Thorax: Ice Dub, Tan UV
  • Wing Buds: Goose Biots, Tan
  • Legs: Spanflex, Ginger

When this pattern is finished out it’s one of those that just catches your eye when you crack you box open. It’s just a fishy looking fly. Usually with bugs like that it’s hard to swap materials, but the two most utilized materials in this fly have solid substitutions.

Body 1: Goose Biots can be swapped for Turkey Biots in the same color in this case.

Tail: Spanflex has lots of equivalent materials that can be used in its place. A few good ones are Life Flex and Sexi Floss.

Wing Buds: Again, Goose Biots can be swapped for Turkey Biots in the same color in this case.

Legs: Again, Spanflex has lots of equivalent materials that can be used in its place. A few good ones are Life Flex and Sexi Floss.

This fly can be an awesome stonefly pattern of any species. All you have to do is switch out the color and size accordingly. If you want to variate the original version try changing up wire colors and leg colors. Sometimes just the slightest change can make the difference.

This fly is a freak of the vise. It combines so many realistic characteristics with the pop of the UV flash. That collaboration is a recipe for a great day on the water! They may take a few extra minutes to tie, but give up a little time at the vise and you’ll reap the benefits on the water.

Fish this bug deeper than you think you need to go. It will drop quickly in the water column if you toss a tungsten bead on it. A nymph rig or a dry dropper are both appropriate homes for this delectable trout snack.
