This is a great pattern when you’re wanting to combine realistic looks with a little flash, and high floating capability. For those reasons, sticking with the recipe is the smartest move here. There is one possible substitution though.
Legs: Black Spanflex legs can do the job, but have a much larger profile, and do not incorporate any flash.
No major variations for this pattern are very prominent. If you want to change it up, try an Ice Dub or Prism Dub thorax instead of the Peacock Herl. That will give you endless color combinations, and add some more flash.
The main selling point of this bug is the buoyancy. This pattern is a high floating machine that also happens to have some flash, and a realistic outline. High country lakes and creeks should be buzzing with the sound of fish feeding as soon and you drop this on top of them.
Fishing the fly close to the edge of a high alpine lake to cruising fish is extremely productive. It also works very well on small, native creek dwelling fish. Dontt forget this bug if you’re fishing a river with a big ant fall after large rains either!
