Tying Video
This ultra realistic emerger pattern has a fair amount of substitutions that can be used. When it’s tied well this fly does a pretty incredible job of imitating a PMD or BWO emerging in the water column.
Tail: Fibers from a Wood Duck Flank Feather Will also suffice as a tail material on this bug.
Body: A Brown Turkey Biot will take the place of the Goose Biot if it’s not available to you.
Wing: The base of a Peasant Rump Feather can also be used for the unique wing on this fly.
This fly looks best when tied in a PMD or BWO variation. Just a quick color change on a few of the materials, and you’ve got two solid bugs ready to hit the water. PMD’s and BWO’s are some of the most prominent insects throughout the West, so having a trustworthy emerger pattern for both is essential.
This fly can double as an emerger, and a drowned dry fly. With so many options on how to fish it, and the different insects it can imitate you better make sure to have more than just a few in your box. Not to mention the fact that it’s so easy to tie. This is a lesser known fly that really deserves a round of applause.
If you fish this fly as an emerger go ahead and fish it in a nymph rig, or as a dropper underneath a dry fly. If you plan to fish it as a drowned dry fly it tends to be best to fish it as a single bug by itself. Give it some floatant to keep it up for a moment, but don’t fight it when it gets sucked under. Sometimes fish really get crazed for a sunken dry.
