Tying Video
Fortunately, this chunky fly has some easy substitutions. Always good news when tying big flies with lots of different materials. As long as the recipe and substitutions are followed closely you’ll come up with a great looking streamer.
Tail: Blood Quill Marabou will take the place of the Woolly Bugger Marabou if need be.
Legs: Any Crazy Legs equivalent, such as Sili Legs, in a similar color will get the job done.
Collar: The collar does not have to made with the Metz Soft Hackle, although it does an exceptional job. Any soft hackle of similar size and color will look great.
Head: The flash in the dubbing is the important part here. Any Ice Dub equivalent, like Prism Dub, in a comparable color will work for you.
The color combinations this fly can be tied in are seemingly endless. Popular colors include olive, black, and brown. A white or tan version would also look very slick, and would be useful for those sunny days streamer fishing. Having a few different sizes in each color for different situations isn’t a bad idea either.
By far the most noticeable thing about this pattern is it’s ability to imitate all kinds of trout food such as baitfish, leeches, and sculpin. The heavy eyes give it a great diving motion that makes for a very attractive swimming pattern. This fly is a super variation of the time tested Woolly Bugger, no pun intended. Having a few of these for those long steamer dominated day in the Fall will likely pay off for you.
Fishing this fly on a loop knot will give it more room for motion, and really give the full effect the fly is meant to provide. Having a thicker leader, let’s say 0x – 2x, will help you in multiple ways. First off, you won’t break off as many fish. Secondly, The stiffer butt section of those leaders will help you when casting, and turning over this bigger fly.
