Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight Eye, Standard Wire, 3X Long, Semi-Dropped Point
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Tail: Woolly Bugger Marabou, Black
  • Body: STS Trilobal Dubbing, Bloody Black Leech

Usually with patterns this simple it is a difficult feat to substitute much, but with this fly there are substitutions for both of the main materials.

Tail: Blood Quill Marabou can also be used for this bug.

Body: Arizona SimiSeal Dubbing in Canadian Black will have a similar look to the STS stuff.

You can easily change the colors up on this fly, but that would also cause you to change the name of the fly. If you do change colors olive and brown are good choices. If you need some extra weight feel free to toss on a brass or tungsten bead sized to the hook.

The brushed out dubbing, and marabou tail give this fly superb under water movement. It almost pulsates as if it was living. The realistic color, shape, and taper also play a big role in a fish committing to eat this fly. It can be fished to multiple species in many different water types. Having some wherever you are is a smart move!

Fishing this fly in a stillwater or a river will require you to get it down in front of the fish. Sinking like is highly recommended when throwing this bug. It is also an awesome pattern to tie on behind a bigger streamer to double the chance at that big boy eating!
