Tying Video
Substitutions on this bug are not too common. There is really only one part of the fly that can be switched up without a major change in how the fly looks or works. The recipe on this fly is simple, and full of materials that are otherwise useful.
Body: Small or Medium (depending on fly size) Opal Mirage Tinsel will create a similar body on this fly.
If you’re looking for a full synthetic Crystal Dip you can replace the deer hair with Antron, or one it’s many similar substitutes. Other than the full synthetic version changing up the colors, and having multiple sizes at your disposal is important.
The obvious attractor quality created by the large amount of flash on this fly is it’s biggest claim to fame. Other than that it does boast realistic segmentation, and wings. You can have plenty of these cranked out in a minimal amount of time.
This fly is best fished in a nymph rig, or as a dropper underneath a dry fly. In smaller sizes it can be the last fly in your nymph rig, and in larger sizes it can be closer to the top of your rig. This bug makes for a great searching fly on new water if you aren’t sure about the bug life.
