The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Talk about a pattern that has stood strong over time! This dry fly is one of the most recognized attractor patterns in the world for many reasons. It’s best not to mess with the recipe on this classic bug, but there is a small change that can be made.
Hackle: Hackle from a Brown Rooster Saddle will also work on this fly.
You can play around with the colors on this fly, but changing the red and green combo would take away it’s royal designation. Nonetheless color changes are welcome on this bug, and can be very effective. Having multiple sizes is also a wise idea in any event.
The Royal Coachman really is the old school king of dry flies. This bug has been through it all, and still continues to catch fish all over the place. It imitates a very wide variety of insects, but has more attractor qualities than realistic, imitative qualities. That’s not always a bad thing, especially for those fish that are eager to smash bigger flies on the surface. If this pattern doesn’t already have a special spot on your dry fly box, it really should.
This is a wonderful choice for fishing high country lakes, and creeks. Many of those wild, native fish are more than willing to smack a bushy fly off the top of the water. Fishing this fly as a general attractor pattern when running a single dry, or a dry dropper is the best home for this bug. Whether you do, or don’t know about the bugs in the water you’re fishing, this fly should be at the top of your list to search out the fish.
