Tying Video
This little mayfly emerger fools a bunch of fish. We can swap out one or two materials on this fly, but otherwise stick with what is called for. This bug will serve you well when it’s tied correctly.
Wing Case: Using any kind of dubbing similar to Ice Dub, such as Prism Dubbing, will work well. Just make sure the color scheme is close to the same.
Legs: Hen Saddle fibers will do the trick for the legs on this fly as well.
The fly shown is tied in BWO colors, but another popular version is the PMD version. To tie up the PMD selection of this bug just make the body a brown goose biot, and use yellow ice dub for the wing case. Have a few sizes to choose from as well, those bugs tend to vary in size quite often.
The slim profile of this pattern is key to imitating the mayflies it’s attempting to mock. The part of this fly that really makes it stand out to the fish is the Ice Dub wing case. It looks as if it’s popping, just like a mayfly actually emerging. The added flash that the Ice Dub adds to such a realistic part of the fly can make all the difference in the world, or the water in this case. The Goose Biot body of the fly gives the correct segmented look, and seals the deal fro this pattern.
Fish this fly either as the first fly in a nymph rig, or as a dropper underneath a dry fly. As the first fly in a nymph succession this bug will be closer to the top of the water column, as if it’s emerging, and popping out on the wing case. Underneath a dry fly it will serve the same purpose if the bugs have already started to hatch. Some of those more picky fish will opt to eat this fly instead of the dry.
