This is another winner coming off the vise of Charlie Craven. Sticking to the original recipe is important, plus Charlie knows what he’s doing obviously. There are a few things we can swap if need be though.

Tail: India Hen Neck will suffice for the partridge if you’re in a pinch.

Casing: A few strands of Pearl Flashabou will get the job done, so will mostly any other flashback material in the right color, and size.

Legs: Again, India Hen Neck will suffice for the partridge if you’re in a pinch.

Match the colors of this fly to a PMD, BWO, other mayfly color scheme, or just a general attractor color. Some popular main colors are olive, tan, red , black, brown, and purple.  After doing that tie each one in a variety of sizes and you’ll have yourself a plethora of heavy, but small mayfly nymphs that will be fooling fish all day long.

The Two Bit Hooker is often overlooked, but is a real workhorse of a fly. It is one of those bugs that has an ability to hook up with fish just about any time of year, anywhere. It’s heavy enough to get down in their feeding zone, but is small enough to not invite refusals. The second bead helps taper the fly, as well as adding weight. Tie up a bunch of these buys in different colors, and sizes. You’ll end up fishing one more often than you expect.

Fishing this pattern underneath a dry fly is a great option. One of the best ways to do that is to put two nymphs underneath your dry (if it’s large enough), with the Two Bit Hooker being the first of the two. That way it will get the smaller, lighter second nymph down into the right water as it plummets toward the bottom.
