Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight Eye, 1X Fine, Wide Gape
  • Thread: Veevus 14/0, Dun
  • Tail: Mayfly Tails, Light Dun
  • Wing: Snowshoe Rabbit Foot, Dun
  • Body: Veevus 14/0, Dun
  • Thorax: Superfine Dubbing, Gray

A few parts of this very effective, realistic mayfly pattern can be exchanged without damaging the intended look of the fly. Besides those few things, it’s important to stick with the recipe on this pattern.

Body: Although not necessary at all, a Goose Biot in Gray can be used for the body instead of just the plain thread.

Thorax: Natural Beaver dubbing can be utilized in place of the Superfine Dubbing if need be, or if you prefer it.

This bug is a great general mayfly pattern. You can leave the colors as they are and just have it be somewhat universal, or you can get specific with the colors to imitate the certain type of mayfly you are seeing come off on the water you’re fishing. Either way, this fly will put some fish in the net. Having multiple sizes is always a good idea, but especially if you plan to use one color universally.

This fly may not have any foam or hair on it, but it floats like a cork. The rabbit that makes up the wing keeps air inside of it. This helps the fly ride high, and be easy to see! The Bunny Dun is just one of those patterns that looks so realistic, it’s hard for the fish to pass it up. The fly is somewhat overlooked, but tie a few up and you won’t look past them ever again.

This bug imitates a mayfly dun being stuck in the surface film, so fish it accordingly. If you have some picky high country fish this is a great pattern to trick them with. It’s really a crazy effective little fly anywhere when mayflies are popping off. There should be a hefty place in your box for some of these without a doubt.
