A few minor parts of this fly are free to be changed out when tying up your own. Otherwise though, Charlie Craven ties it a certain way for a reason. Per usual, sticking to the recipe is the most sound idea.

Body 1: Woolly Bugger Marabou in a comparable color is the best substitution.

Head: Any similar flashy dubbing will do the trick. Prism Dubbing in a similar color is always a nice substitute.

The color combinations to imitate brook, brown, or rainbow trout are the most popular. If you want to change it up a little bit more you can also tie this fly to look like a sucker minnow, or a sculpin. Having multiple colors of flies is arguably the most important factor in streamer fishing. The color can make all the difference as the day, and water take their course and change.

Depending on how you tie this fly, it can morph into many different species with just some color changes. Having the ability to imitate multiple species is a must in the streamer fishing game, and this bug blows everything else out of the water in that category. This fly also has a decent amount of weight behind it, so you can rest assured that it’s getting down into the zone where those big guys are holding in.

When fishing this fly make sure to switch up your retrieve styles if you aren’t getting any eats. Sometimes just slightly slower or faster is the key to getting a fish to inhale a big streamer. You’ll also want to tie it on a loop knot, this will give the fly plenty of dodging, and diving movement in the water.
