Tying Video
There are plenty of substitution to be had when tying up this realistic little stone. Even though there are some good substitutions, we always recommend trying to follow the recipe as closely as possible for the best results off the vise, and on the water.
Tail: Turkey Biots in Brown, and of similar size, do a fine job on the tail of this fly.
Casing: Any FINO Skin equivalent, such as Thin Skin, in a similar color will do the trick.
Legs: Brown Hackle Fibers of your choice should look just fine for the legs of this fly, although the India Hen Back does work exceptionally well.
Wing Pads: Again, any FINO Skin equivalent, such as Thin Skin, in a similar color will do the trick.
You can tie this bug in a flashback version without too much hassle at all. Having some of the regular, and the flashback should serve you well for a wide variety of situations. The golden color is the best suit on this particular bug, but brown and black look nice too. As always, having different sizes, colors, and variations can be the ticket.
Along with being heavy enough to plummet to the bottom where the stones dwell, this pattern has ultra realistic characteristics all over it. The layered wing pads and casing in a mottled color give the fly a sort of 3D look that can’t be beat. Not to mention the SLF dubbing that makes stonefly nymphs seemingly come to life. This fly will get down to the fish, and it will more than likely fool it while it’s down there.
Fish this fly as deep as possible, preferably as the second or third fly in a nymph rig. That is where it will be the most productive. In the smaller sizes you can also fish it under a big stonefly, or hopper dry fly with some killer results.
