Nick Granato developed this patter for big, predatory fish of multiple species. The materials list for this bug is pretty specific for a reason. This fly swims, dodges, darts, and dives like a champ. For those reasons, and a few others, this pattern is best tied will the original materials that are called for in the recipe.

The original colors this fly is tied are great looking, and certainly get the attention of some big fish. You can also switch out the colors as you see fit. A black and purple collaboration would be an awesome color for this fly, but so would lots of other things. Get creative with it, that’s is one of the beauties of tying streamer!

The Chubby Muffin is a big meal for a big fish. This is one of those flies you want to have in your box when you’re hunting for a magnum of a fish. This fly has great under water movement that is sure to get plenty of looks, and hopefully eats. If there is a healthy population of sculpins, or even sucker minnows, you should be chunking one of these guys into the depths.

Make sure you fish this fly on a heavy enough leader, such as 0x when trout fishing. The thicker butt section will help turn over this big piece of meat. It will also hopefully help you not break off the stud of a fish that decides to inhale this fly.
