Tying tips: Tie in enough bucktail to coat the whole body and loosely tie in. Then use your thumb to spread the bucktail around the shank of the hook to get even coverage.
The list of deceiver variations are a mile long. I’ll just stick with some of the favorites.
This fly catches fish. Thats all there is to it, this is one of the best streamers you can learn to tie. You can tie them in every color and size to imitate any baitfish there is. The movement of the hackle tail and the pulsing of the bucktail works on fish from trout to bass to redfish. Tie a ton of these and fill a box with them.
If you do not use any weight in your deceiver you can fish them right off the banks, over shallow points, and along the surface. To get to the strike zone for most fish you will have to add weight to the fly or use a sinking fly line to get to the right depth. (I prefer the sinking fly line) For trout keep the fly in faster moving riffles and near structure. Be sure to get it deep through the runs.
For bass keep the fly near structure. Rocks, logs, bluffs, tree cover, or other structure is a great place to find big bass waiting to ambush prey. Find large baitballs and cast out with a sinking line to get the fly tot the bottom of the baitball and then strip the fly through it. This is a great tactic for striper and other bass species.
In saltwater find baitfish and cast this fly near them or schools of fish. This fly can catch just about anything.
